The History Of Black Tech Columbus
In July of 2018, 11 Columbus leaders got together to discuss the need for representation in the technology community. When looking at the Central Ohio tech scene it was noted that there wasn’t a lot of black representation at meetups, conferences, or even within companies.
Therefore, the group decided to create an organization that would address the lack of spaces for black technologist. However, they needed to be sure that there would be a demand for this. In August of 2018, the group hosted their first event-a Wednesday Happy Hour.
The goal of this event was to get 10 technologists to come out and talk about what they’d like to see added to the Columbus tech scene. To an overwhelming surprise, over 125 technologists came out that day, reinforcing the need for an organization to be created. Hence, the birth of Black Tech Columbus.
